Tale Of Genji Overveiw 1. The men expected the hidden flower to be from the upper class, however, middle class was acceptable. Being in the lower class was totally unacceptable. The woman must have flawless beauty, intelligence, faithfulness (even though this was hypocritical), and submission. Submissiveness is a wishy-washy characteristic because Genji was most attracted to those that rejected him and did not accept his advances as Murasaki and Aoi did. Genji wanted to mold the perfect woman or hidden flower out of Murasaki. She was hidden away and he kidnapped her to make her into who he wanted her to be. Genji seemed to enjoy the chase and challenges involved with women. He seemed to move from one woman to the next to boost his self esteem and solidify his image as a man. Each woman had admirable traits; however, each woman had very distinctable flaws to Genji, which discredited her from being the perfect woman. For example, Murasaki was very young and not submissive due to her immaturity. Aoi was very harsh and provided no chase for him because she already belonged to him. Rokujo was seven years older than Genji and was very jealous. The Saffron Flower did not possess the flawless beauty that was desired. All of these women were beautiful in their own ways; Genji was too blind to realize it. 2. Geni was charming on the exterior to most that knew him. However, a closer examination reveals that he is selfish, uncompassionate, unfaithful and superficial. He is everything I am not looking for in a man. He sees what he wants and he takes it, as he did with Murasaki. He is very hypocritical. Genji expects his wife to be faithful to him while he is constantly sharing himself with other women. Lady Murasaki does praise Genji; however, her compliments do not match his actions. Lady Murasaki might have experienced a similar experience in her own life. She might have been using Genji as an example to show how men are praised for doing immoral acts such as being unfaithful when women are ridiculed for such acts. 3. Women are expected to serve men submissively. They are like flowers...beautiful, fragile and they have no choice in who comes along and picks them. Women were used for entertainment and satisfaction. The book seemed to basically revolve around Genjis relationships with women. 4. Clothes represented social status throughout the novel. Even if women were not completely acceptable to Genji, he would send them clothes to bring them up to his standards. People were very self-conscious of style. Still today people are judged based on name brands and styles of clothing. 5. Sneaking around was a central theme in the novel. Shadows and screens enhanced this subject. The houses and rooms were easily entered and open which might have represented the ease with which Genji entered into affairs with various women. The houses were remote which made sneaking around possible. Several instances occurred which represented the characters emotions and the events taking place. For example, the storm after Aois death represented the mourning and darkness in Genjis life. 6. Poetry and letters were the main form of communication throughout the novel. Secrecy and coded information were very important as well. Secrecy made the encounters more exciting and mystifying. â€Å"The Red Haired Barbarians:† The Dutch in Japan The success of Dutch merchants in Japan illustrates the uniqueness of the Dutch Republic amongst the 17th century European countries. Not only would the Dutch come to dominate trade in Asia, in Japan they would demonstrate a practicality that would enable them to be the singular Western force present in a country that would severely isolate itself from any foreign intrusion. The V.O.C. could indeed be a ruthless cartel in securing trade from its competition and in dealing with indigenous populations around the world, as in the case of slavery where human beings were reduced to mere commodities to be bought and sold. Yet, the relationship between early Dutch traders, the V.O.C., and the Japanese people delineates an entrepreneurial and cultural adeptness that was beyond that of their European contemporaries and competitors in the 17th century. It was the Portuguese, rather than the Dutch, were the first Europeans to begin a relationship with the people of Japan. The Portuguese arrived in 1543 when Japan was a war torn country divided by different warlords. Along with trade, the Portuguese brought Jesuit missionaries who successfully proselytized Christianity if not to a large-scale, which would nonetheless be significant to future Japanese rulers. During their time in Japan, the Portuguese would see the rise of the three great shogunal unifiers. The first of these was Oda Nobunaga, who actually supported Christian efforts in order to counter 2 the militant Buddhist domains that resisted his rule. The second unifier, Toyotomi Hideyoshi was much less tolerant of the Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries, and subsequently vacillated between policies of tolerance and b... ...to a greatly different culture. Each of us as individuals are responsible for our own monies, our own bills, spending habits and we are ultimately responsible for our money which in turn allows us much latitude in how we choose to spend our money. With this said, it can be said that there is little no to no ethics involved when we deal with our own funds or finances. Is this true? No! In fact there are many moral and ethical decisions involved in spending our own money. We must choose to pay our obligatory bills and not go gamble it all away. We are obligated, unless we don’t drive, to pay for our gasoline and not spend it on illicit drugs or other illegal activities. This is the small side of ethics in an economical world. The larger picture of ethics in the economy involves the government, politics, banks and businesses in all forms. In the majority of cases, when one of these entities is dealing with monies, 90% of the time it is money that is owned by the public in some way. This money might be for stocks purchased from a broker, money deposited into a bank, campaign funds or funds approved by a local ballot. There are many factors at play and many more entities than this. They have a much larger responsibility ethically than we do. It is their responsibility to make sure the public’s money is spent as it was given permission to be spent. If we approved for Jones 2 them to spend publics’ money on a playground then that is where it needs to go. Campaign funds, the same thing. I can continue on indefinitely. You have all heard the news where embezzlement of funds, stolen funds, misappropriation of funds happens and in these instances this becomes a crime. The morals that were ignored became an ethical situation that was violated thus violating our trust as the public. It is unfortunate that we face this or the threat of this each day and that we never know when the next person we hold in trust will try and disappear with monies that we, as a whole, have put out there, to try and make something better. Let us exonerate greed and these problems will lessen. Our ethics will improve as will parts of our economy. Do we as a nation agree with having a global economy? Global economy has slowed down our nation’s production thus eliminating jobs in the USA. What do we get in return? Our global economy has allowed the use of cheaper labor to mass produce items at a much lower cost. This would constitute much of the import trade. What does it cost to fund this trade and take into consideration that dollars in the USA do not equal foreign currency. Does it balance out by time transportation cost and tariffs have been paid? Maybe we have saved a few dollars as a whole but do we really know? What if we pulled back some of this import and foreign labor and allow more of our own nation the ability to work in positions that we do not have available because those positions are in another country. Does this really affect our global economy to the point of despair or will our economy strengthen in our nation because it is our people who work and our people who spend more money. Yes the money does make the world go around and the advocacy to pull all foreign labor is not what this is about. We do need some form of global economy as there is room to have all of us on the same side. Jones 2 There are some parts of the world that have more advanced technology or a specific cheese or wine or lumber that we at this time cannot reproduce. It is the items that we cannot reproduce that should constitute the import trade. With this we do help our nation that much more while still also continuing a needed global economy. English 52 3:00pm class Faith Ben Carson today is a neurosurgeon that once was just a young black kid from the ghetto with no knowledge of anything the world. Today he is one of the most inspiring person in the world, he was the first neurosurgeon to separate conjoined twins from the head, without bleeding to death. He had no dad, and a mom with psychiatric problems. He faced a hard teenage and childhood, in his life he faced problems from racism, anger management, and poverty. This book shows us how having faith with no fear of the unknown, this book ould lead anyone to have a successful spiritual life and career. His faith led him to go through all the struggles and come out successful. Ben Carson had different experiences throughout his childhood, and having faith led him to go through struggles. When he was just a boy, his father left him, his brother, and mother, because of another family he had. As a child Ben tried to figure out why his father had left them for another family, Ben used church as a way to escape his problems.He began to really have faith, when he heard the preacher talk about a missionary doctor; from then on, his faith set him on a path to become a doctor. There also came a time where his faith was put to the test. At 14 years old he struggled with a bad temper. All the hate he felt from his dad leaving him was in his heart, and he had never let it go. One day at school, he sat listening to classical music when one of his friends made fun of him and was going to change the music.Carson, with all the hate he had, he pulled out a pocket knife he had bought and aimed for his stomach, he hit his friend’s belt buckle. He ran home and thought to himself he was crazy. He got home and locked himself in the bathroom and prayed to God to take his temper away and he prayed and sang, â€Å"Jesus is All the World to Me. † From then on his faith only became stronger, and whenever he felt anything negative, going back to this moment made him feel better. God gave him a second chance to life and make more of it. From then on, he knew he was going to be an instrument of God to save people.When he went on a job for the university to recruit students with his current wife, he almost had an accident while falling asleep on the wheel; he felt relieved and thanked God for helping and giving him yet another chance to life. His struggle through Yale University, when he couldn’t find a job, his faith and willingness helped him find one. Even in his junior year, when he had no money, he walked through the university, thinking and asking God how he was going to make it through, and, just like that, he found 10 dollars in the ground. He knew God was guiding him through and watching over him.In another school year, when he also went through rough economic times, he then again walked through his campus to see if he would find money again, but, no luck, his university did a test of honesty and said that all of the test the c lass had taken, had been burned in a fire his whole class, there were notices posted some of the students just said, that they will just say they did not see the post. Carson was the only one left and the teacher and a photographer came to take the picture of the only honest student in class and right then and there the teacher handed him a 10 dollar bill.As he grew older and became a doctor during surgeries and he felt lost his faith helped him and believed God would guide his hands and even though he did have times, he failed, his surgeries he had faith, that made him strong to overcome it. At the end without faith he wouldn’t be where he is at today. In my life, without faith I wouldn’t be where I am right now. Ever since I read this book, it has inspired my faith in a spiritual and professional way. I have gone to church more often and found the peace I was looking for.I no longer have temper issues, either. I have been more successful in my job and will soon be ge tting another job. I have been dedicated more, and I don’t make sudden decisions, which only benefits me. My faith has also made me outgoing in my career. I never give up finding a solution to a problem. There’s a saying that says â€Å"faith can move mountains. † I believe that Ben Carson is a perfect example of this, and it’s an example that I am following step by step in school and work. When I feel frustrated and ngry, I let my faith intervene and help me get through my own struggles, My marriage has also gotten much better. I have set my life goals based on this book and I know I could achieve them. There is a saying that says faith is the last to die, and that’s the difference between hope and faith. I believe those who hope wait around for things to come out good or wait for things to be handed to them are the ones who never step to the world of the unknown because of fear and like of faith. But with faith you have to put in your work and no t give up on your goals.Ben Carson made it from the ghetto to being a successful, respected Neurosurgeon; because of his faith, he never once stopped believing in himself. His mom’s faith in him also helped; she knew he was going to be special. I believe we all have our destiny this life and that God has set a path for us, our choices, decisions and faith are the ones that decide our path. I will follow my own path just as Ben Carson did; I do not where it will take me, but I know that faith will keep me on the right path. Because faith is the last thing to die.
